SHD Olive Grove Features
Planting Pattern :
The most common planting patterns today range between 3–4 meters between rows and 1–1.5 meters between trees. This results in planting densities of over 1,600 trees per hectare. Choosing a planting pattern that matches the agro-climatic characteristics of the region and the selected variety is essential for the success of the orchard.
Cost Effectiveness
The most common planting patterns today range between 3–4 meters between rows and 1–1.5 meters between trees, resulting in planting densities exceeding 1,600 trees per hectare. Selecting the appropriate planting layout in line with the area’s agro-climatic conditions and the chosen variety is crucial to achieving optimal productivity.
Production
Entry into production is rapid. By the third year after planting, yields reach 3–4 tons per hectare. Years of experience in different olive-growing regions indicate stable yields ranging between 8–12 tons per hectare. In warm-climate orchards, and with proper crop management, yields can reach up to 16 tons per hectare.
Crop Quality
Mechanized harvesting in Super High Density (SHD) olive groves ensures that olives are collected at the proper stage of ripeness with minimal damage, allowing for quick transport
Arbequina, characteristics of plant and oil
Choosing the right variety is one of the key factors in achieving the objectives of a Super High Density (SHD) olive plantation.
Arbequina is a highly resilient, very productive, and long-lasting variety. These characteristics make it ideal for SHD olive farming, as it has adapted extremely well since the earliest trials.
But what exactly are the detailed characteristics of the Arbequina olive tree?
- Low vigor
- Open crown
- Medium to high canopy density
- Small, short leaves of medium width
- Small fruits that turn black when fully ripe
- Ovoid-shaped pit with a rough surface
Arbequina olive trees are self-fertilizing and ensure an early entry into production, with high and consistent yields. They also have an excellent rooting capacity. The variety shows resistance to diseases such as tuberculosis, leaf spot, and verticillium, which may affect it only mildly. Regarding cold, Arbequina trees are known for their strong tolerance to low temperatures.
Arbequina olives produce a high-quality oil, although with relatively low stability. The oil is harmonious, sweet, delicate, and aromatic. Its medium fruitiness has low bitterness and low pungency. Arbequina oil can be marketed as a monovarietal product or blended with other oils to enhance its stability.
